SWN and Swedish telecommunications company Bahnhof enter cooperation via OpenNet
11/11, 2025
SWN (Stadtwerke Neumünster) is opening its fibre network to additional service providers and has signed a cooperation agreement with Swedish internet provider Bahnhof. The link between the two is OpenNet, which contributes its many years of Open Access experience from Denmark.
In future, households and businesses with an SWN fibre connection will be able to choose from multiple offers — including internet services from Bahnhof, one of Scandinavia’s largest and most well-known providers.
Fabian Bühring, Head of Telecommunications at SWN, explains:
“We are opening our fibre network to several service providers because we believe in Open Access — a model that allows companies across the sector to work together. By making our network accessible to additional providers, we are promoting competition while also increasing choice for end customers. We are convinced that open fibre networks are the way forward for a more connected and efficient future.”
Bühring continues:
“We are pleased to be working with Bahnhof. The company brings extensive experience and a strong focus on customer satisfaction — a good addition to our network and our region.”
Bahnhof continues expansion in Germany
The Swedish provider is already active on multiple fibre networks in the German market. With this new cooperation, Bahnhof is further expanding its presence.
“The collaboration with SWN via OpenNet is a logical step in our strategy to strengthen our presence in Germany. The market offers enormous potential — both in size and in its openness to digital innovation. At the same time, we share with SWN and OpenNet the ambition to make fast and stable internet accessible to even more people,” says Philipp Riederer von Paar, CEO of Bahnhof Germany.
Households and businesses connected to SWN’s fibre network are expected to be able to choose Bahnhof products as early as the end of 2025.
True Open Access — a marketplace for all
SWN is one of three shareholders that collectively own 50 percent of OpenNet’s German division. With the opening of its fibre network, Bahnhof and SWN become partners on the platform — on the same terms and with the same standardised contracts as all other partners.
For SWN, this is the first cooperation with an international service provider via OpenNet, while Bahnhof already collaborates with several network operators within OpenNet’s Danish business unit.
Mario Schuster, Head of Sales and Business Development at OpenNet Germany, explains:
“The agreement between SWN and Bahnhof shows how Open Access works in practice, and OpenNet is pleased to serve as the link between the companie. OpenNet draws on many years of experience from Denmark — and just as in Denmark, we are now creating a marketplace in Germany that is attractive to both large and smaller companies. That is the core of true Open Access: when we bring the industry together — municipal utilities, fibre-network companies, service providers — we accelerate digital development and connect Germany.”
